This spring / summer, BNE Water Foundation will be working in collaboration with Drink Local Drink Tap (U.S. NPO) and the people of Mulajje village, in the
Luweero district of Central Uganda. 700 students (over 300 are orphans) at the St. Bonaventure school / orphanage are in need of access to clean water.
These kids' health, safety and education are currently being affected greatly, so we are stepping up to do something about it.
We will be drilling a borehole and installing a water pump that will be maintained by a local water committee. The committee has already been formed and is comprised of 9 adults and
4 students. Twice a month hygiene and sanitation will be taught to all students, staff and the community by project director / water committee member, Irene Kityo.
The Luweero District is north of Kampala in central Uganda. In the early 80's using Luweero
as a base, current Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his then rebel crew the NRA,
shot their way to power using child soldiers. Hundreds of thousands of civilians were
murdered during the Luweero war and even more were placed in camps.
In this dry region, school children are currently forced to walk 2.5 miles up to 4.5 miles for
water. This water should be boiled for purification but is rarely done due to the lack of
money for kerosene or charcoal. The daily water hauling occurs before school at 6am and
again at 5:30pm. The early haul forces students to sometimes miss part or full days of
learning. Female students miss an average of 3 school days per month due to a
lack of clean water to wash with during menstrual cycles. Girls also face the danger of
rape when fetching water in the evenings if older male students are not available.
A complete hydro-geological survey has already been conducted and we hope to start
drilling in May. If we cannot raise enough money in time then we will be starting in July.
We need your help to make this happen. 100% of donations to BNE for this project will be
used strictly for drilling and materials only. Let's make this happen! Please donate
whatever you can and share this project with your friends.
All project developments will be documented on our blog. So, stay tuned because this
is definitely going down. It's very easy for you to be a part of this.
